Cultural Connection

The Ultimate Guide to Arts in Castlereagh

September 2010 – January 2011

Welcome to the eighth issue of ‘Cultural Connection’, Castlereagh Borough Council’s ultimate guide to arts and cultural events happening in your Borough. Look out for new issues of ‘Cultural Connection’ in the Spring, Summer and Autumn every year. We have now created a blog to make it easier for you to follow the events that have happened, or are happening in the Borough. Why not visit and discover what’s been happening in Castlereagh http://castlereagharts.blogspot.com/

The Summer program was a fantastic success, with a great variety events, including ‘Born to Prance’- a piece of dance theatre, telling the story of Anthea McWilliams as she danced from one end of Ireland to the other to celebrate her 50th birthday. Anthony Toner treated us to his dolcet tones in Belvoir Players studio for a ‘First Friday’ performance. We provided opportunities to try out new and old art forms, with top quality artists; in our Summer Taster Workshop program; with animation, film-making, playwrighting with the irrepressible Vincent Higgins, and a most enjoyable oil-painting workshop with Helen Sanlon, who returns in December to open a new exhibition in Dundonald. The Rock and Pop School resulted in an unprecedented 10 original songs being created by participants, and gave over 40 young people the opportunity to work with music industry legends, such as John Wilson and Linley Hamilton, while using music and song to tackle issues such as drugs, alcohol and social inclusion. Through our Summer Scheme programs, we offered the under 11’s of the borough a chance to participate in art, drama and music. If you have suggestions for new types of events you would like to see in your Borough, please feel free to call me anytime. If you are picking this up from an arts venue or café, why not call me and join our mailing list and receive this by email or post 3 times a year. Look forward to seeing you at an event soon.
